Conditioning through the Hurt: A More Careful Approach to Strength Training

If you’re reading this, it’s probably clear to you that you’ve been through a lot and have faced numerous challenges regarding your body and overall well-being. It's important for me to acknowledge and honor the experiences that have shaped you. You’re contemplating a real big change that you anticipate difficulties. You know from experience this kind of thing can trigger or exacerbate cooccurring conditions like pain, ptsd, autoimmune, neurological-muscular, proprioception, or mental health.

It's encouraging to hear that you have embarked on a path of self-exploration and transformation and you may be seeking mentors, therapists, and trainers who can guided you towards greater acceptance, love, and connection with your body. I commend and encourage your vulnerability about your body. The journey of healing and self-discovery is ongoing, and it's wonderful that you have found a sense of purpose in wanting to actively participate.

Remember to be kind to yourself and recognize that healing takes time. It's important to continue to prioritize self-care and seek any form of support when needed. You have shown resilience and strength in your journey so far, and I believe you have the capacity to make a positive impact on your situation, regardless of your condition right now.

If there's anything specific you'd like to discuss or any questions you have, please reach out.

Welcome to a journey of resilience, compassion, and personal growth. In a world that often overlooks the struggles, it's time to pave a path of understanding, support, and empowerment. I am here to guide you through a more careful approach to strength training—one that acknowledges and respects the hurdles you face, while nurturing your body, mind, and spirit.

I’m your peer. As a 50-year old, non-binary queer, lifter, runner, dancer with chronic pain and complex ptsd, I have overcome much but only with the support of an incredible revolving team of family and friends, therapists, trainers, nurses, and other practitioners. I’m in the midst of my strength training journey and at this moment I am very hopeful and proud, feeling strong and resilient while only doing my squats, hinges, or bipedal movements at a low intensity with plenty of rest. My depression and anxiety are managed with nature-time, breath work, creativity, and connection with my inner-circle. Hard times are always afoot but they wane like the good times so I always want to have something to look forward to.

Onward!

Strength Training Beyond the Surface

When we think of strength training, many of us envision intense workouts and grueling routines. But here's the truth: exercise isn't one-size-fits-all, and it shouldn't be. We must break free from the molds and stereotypes imposed upon us by mainstream fitness culture. Together, we will explore a different kind of strength—one that goes beyond physique.

Understanding the Barriers

Let us acknowledge the significant barriers to exercise. These obstacles can be overwhelming and discouraging, making it challenging to take the first step toward a healthier and stronger you. But fear not, for I am here to offer a safe haven where you can reclaim your power, one carefully designed workout at a time. Acknowledge and respect your body's limitations. Listen to your body and pay attention to pain signals. Start slowly and gradually increase the intensity and duration of your workouts over time. Remember, progress is not always linear, and it's okay to take breaks or modify exercises as needed.

Tailored Training for Unique Individuals

I specialize in functional strength training—an approach that focuses on movements and exercises that improve your ability to perform daily tasks with ease and efficiency. More than that, I tailor each workout to suit your specific needs, taking into account your unique circumstances, motor control or proprioception dysfunction, pain levels, and emotional traumas. Together, we create a safe and effective exercise regimen that empowers you rather than pushes you to your limits. Work closely with your personal trainer to create an individualized workout plan that considers your specific challenges. Focus on exercises that improve your functional strength and help you perform daily tasks with greater ease. Incorporate a variety of movements, such as bodyweight exercises, resistance training, and balance exercises, to enhance motor control and proprioception.

Compassion as the Driving Force

Compassion lies at the heart of my training philosophy. I believe in radical body compassion—the idea that every body is unique, deserving of respect, love, and acceptance. You are not defined by your pain or past traumas. Instead, we use them as stepping stones toward a stronger, more resilient version of yourself. Through gentle guidance, understanding, and support, we reclaim your body as a vessel for empowerment, healing, and growth. Approach your training with self-compassion and patience. Understand that healing and growth take time, and it's essential to honor your body's journey. Practice mindfulness and engage in self-care activities outside of your training sessions to support your overall well-being. Seek support from mental health professionals if needed to address complex PTSD and emotional traumas.

Fun and Active Workouts

Let's dispel the notion that exercise has to be dull, monotonous, or excessively disciplined. As we embark on this transformative journey together, you'll find that fun and excitement are integral to our workouts. From incorporating playful elements to exploring innovative exercises, we make every session an opportunity for personal growth and joy. After all, who said hard work can't be enjoyable? Inject fun and creativity into your workouts to keep them engaging and enjoyable. Incorporate elements of play, such as using stability balls, resistance bands, or even dancing, to add variety and excitement. Explore different exercise modalities, such as yoga, Pilates, or swimming, to find activities that resonate with you and align with your goals.

The Power of "Stronger Together"

Strength isn't just a measure of physical prowess; it also lies in the connections we build with one another. Our training sessions become a community, a support system where we uplift and inspire each other. Together, we overcome barriers, celebrate victories, and learn from setbacks. Identify who shares your values and goals. Some thrive in group training sessions, join fitness classes, or participate online in spaces that foster a sense of camaraderie and support. Collaborate with your fellow participants to share experiences, celebrate achievements, and provide encouragement during challenging times. Together, you can overcome barriers and achieve greater heights.

in Conclusion

Remember that your journey toward strength and wellness is as unique as you are. Embrace your body. Acknowledge the challenges you face but never let them define you. Your conditions are transient and transformable! Through a more careful approach to strength training—one rooted in compassion, intelligence, and resilience—you will discover the true depth of your capabilities.

Let us embark on this transformative adventure together. Conditioning through the hurt, we will rewrite the narrative, empowering one another, and reclaiming our bodies as vessels of strength, growth, and radical self-compassion. Remember, my dear friend, you are not alone. I am here for you, to inspire you, and celebrate your triumphs. Together, we shall rise, stronger than ever before.
